As production inkjet capabilities have advanced, finishing — not printing — has emerged as the primary factor in determining overall productivity. Finishing processes are more complex, less standardized, and harder to automate and integrate at the same pace as high-speed inkjet printing.

Alliance Insights, EMT International, Müller Martini, and Tecnau teamed up to survey hundreds of print service providers and print buyers. The research goal was to understand how finishing is impacting productivity, where constraints exist, and how print providers are adapting their investment and automation strategies in response. The findings highlight gaps that exist today and reveal how print service providers can gain a competitive advantage by focusing on finishing.
